Sintra is located 28 km northwest of Lisbon and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The historic area contains three major palaces: the Moorish Castle (originally built by the Moors before the 9th century, captured by King Afonso Henriques in 1147), Pena Palace (completed 1854, commissioned by King Ferdinand II) and Quinta da Regaleira (completed 1910). Cascais, 30 km west of Lisbon on the Portuguese Riviera, is typically combined with Sintra and Cabo da Roca – the westernmost point of continental Europe at 165 m above sea level.
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and the westernmost capital city in continental Europe. The historic centre includes Alfama – the oldest district, with Moorish origins predating 711 AD – and Belém, the site of the Age of Discovery monuments: Jerónimos Monastery (construction began 1502, UNESCO-listed) and Torre de Belém (16th century, UNESCO-listed). Cristo Rei, a 28-metre statue on a 75-metre pedestal, stands across the Tagus River in Almada and is visible from most elevated viewpoints in the city. Most private Lisbon tours cover 6–8 of the city’s most important districts, landmarks, and monuments in a single day.
Fátima is located 130 km north of Lisbon and receives approximately 6 million visitors per year, making it one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. The Marian apparitions were reported on six occasions between May 13 and October 13, 1917. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima includes the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary (consecrated 1953) and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity (opened 2007, capacity 9,000). Batalha Monastery, 21 km from Fátima, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built between 1386 and 1517 to commemorate the Battle of Aljubarrota (1385).
Nazaré is an Atlantic fishing town 120 km north of Lisbon, known for Praia do Norte, where the Nazaré Canyon – an underwater canyon extending approximately 170 km into the Atlantic – generates some of the largest waves ever surfed. Óbidos, 20 km south of Nazaré, is a medieval walled town whose 12th-century fortification walls remain intact. The town is famous for Ginja, a traditional cherry liqueur typically served in a chocolate cup. São Martinho do Porto, between the two towns, features a horseshoe-shaped bay sheltered from the Atlantic swell.
Évora is located 130 km southeast of Lisbon and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The historic centre contains a Roman Temple built in the 1st century AD, the Cathedral of Évora (construction began 1186) and the Chapel of Bones – a 16th-century ossuary built from the remains of approximately 5,000 people by Franciscan monks. Évora is also the principal city of the Alentejo wine region, known for indigenous varieties including Aragonez, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet.
Tomar is located 140 km north of Lisbon. The Convent of Christ was originally built as a Templar fortress in 1160 by Grand Master Gualdim Pais and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The Knights Templar established their Portuguese headquarters here and used the fortified complex as a military base during the Reconquista. Almourol Castle, 20 km south of Tomar, was built on an island in the Tagus River in 1171, also commissioned by Gualdim Pais.
Coimbra is located 200 km north of Lisbon. The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 by King Dinis I, making it one of the oldest continuously operating universities in Europe, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. The university’s Joanina Library, commissioned by King João V in the early 18th century, houses approximately 60,000 volumes and is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque libraries in the world.
Arrábida Natural Park begins 40 km south of Lisbon, covering a limestone mountain range that rises to 501 m along the Setúbal Peninsula. The park was established in 1976 and protects 10,800 hectares of Mediterranean vegetation, cliffs and coastline. The mountains shelter the southern coast from the Atlantic swell, creating exceptionally clear and calm waters ideal for swimming. Setúbal, the main city at the base of the park, is the centre of the Setúbal Peninsula Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) wine region.
