Tour Overview

Sintra, located 27 km from Lisbon, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape in 1995 — the 17th UNESCO inscription in Portugal. Within its Serra mountain range stand five royal and aristocratic palaces built between the 10th and early 20th centuries, four of which are accessible on a single private day tour with a licensed guide.

This tour dedicates the full 8 hours to Sintra’s palaces, gardens, and fortifications — rather than combining Sintra with Cascais, Cabo da Roca, or Fátima as other itineraries do. The standard schedule covers Pena Palace (built 1842–1854) and Quinta da Regaleira (completed 1910), with optional stops at the Moorish Castle (8th–9th century) or National Palace of Sintra (15th–16th century). Your guide confirms the itinerary at pickup based on your interests and the day’s conditions.

Departure from Lisbon is at 08:30-09:00. Arriving at Pena Palace before 09:30-10:00 places your group ahead of the main visitor wave, which builds between 11:00 and 14:00 from April to October. The vehicle is private — your group only, no fixed schedule, no strangers.

Tips For Visiting Lisbon

Arrive at Pena Palace before 10:00. The palace road is a single uphill lane. Visitor vehicles begin arriving in significant numbers from 10:00-11:00 onward, and car parks fill quickly after 10:00 on peak days (April–October). Departing Lisbon at 08:30-09:00 typically means arriving at the ticket area by 10:00, before the main wave.

Book palace tickets in advance — especially for summer. Pena Palace timed-entry slots sell out 3–4 weeks ahead in July and August. Quinta da Regaleira access to the Initiation Well can fill by midday in spring and summer. Purchase tickets online before your travel date. If you do not have tickets, your guide will focus time on the historic centre, Moorish Castle (generally available same-day), and the town streets.

Wear suitable footwear. Sintra’s historic centre is built on a hillside with narrow cobblestone streets. Pena Palace involves a 15-minute uphill walk from the park entrance to the palace itself (or a shuttle within the park for an additional fee). Quinta da Regaleira has gravel paths, steep staircases, and narrow underground tunnels. Flat, closed-toe shoes are essential for all ages.

Serra de Sintra microclimate. The Serra has a distinct microclimate — significantly cooler and more humid than Lisbon throughout the year. In winter (December–February), temperatures at Pena Palace elevation can be 4–6°C below Lisbon temperatures. Bring a light layer even in summer; a waterproof outer layer in winter.

Local pastry stop – Sintra’s most famous local pastry is the queijada — a small tart of fresh cheese, sugar, eggs, and flour — made in Sintra since at least 1756. Casa Piriquita (founded 1862, Rua das Padarias) is the most established bakery in the historic centre; their speciality is the travesseiro — a puff pastry pillow filled with almond and egg cream.

What You Can See

Pena Palace (Palácio da Pena)

Pena Palace stands at 528 m above sea level, at the highest point of the Serra de Sintra. Construction began in 1842 under King Ferdinand II of Portugal (Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, consort of Queen Maria II) and was completed in 1854. The architect was Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege, a Prussian military engineer.

Von Eschwege built the new palace around the ruins of a 16th-century Hieronymite monastery destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The original monastery chapel and a 16th-century cistern survive within the current structure. The Triton Gate — a sculpted archway at the entrance — incorporates stonework from the original monastery.

The palace combines four architectural styles: Neo-Gothic towers and battlements, a Neo-Manueline portal arch with armillary sphere, Neo-Islamic interior rooms, and a Neo-Renaissance Clock Tower. The exterior was repainted in its original red and yellow colour scheme in the 1990s, following documentation of historical colour records from 19th-century archives.

The park surrounding the palace covers 85 hectares and contains species from temperate regions across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, introduced by Ferdinand II during the 19th century. On clear days the Atlantic Ocean is visible from the battlements, 28 km to the west. Peak visitor numbers build between 10:30 and 14:00; this tour departs Lisbon at 08:30 to arrive before congestion. A guided visit to the palace interior and park takes 2 to 2.5 hours.

Admission: Not included in tour price. Check current prices at parquesdesintra.pt. Timed entry mandatory; book online 2–4 weeks ahead during April–October. Please get in touch with us before purchasing any tickets.

Moorish Castle

The Moorish Castle occupies a ridge above Sintra at approximately 450 m elevation. The fortification dates to the 8th–9th century AD, built during the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. It was captured by Afonso Henriques — the first King of Portugal — during the Reconquista in 1147, the same campaign that recaptured Lisbon.

The castle walls extend approximately 450 m along the granite ridge, with five towers and a cistern originally capable of holding 3 months of water for a garrison. During the 19th century, King Ferdinand II undertook restoration of the battlements. Archaeological excavations have uncovered Moorish-era ceramics and coins from the 8th–9th centuries within the walls. The castle was declared a National Monument in 1910.

The battlements offer views over the Atlantic Ocean, Sintra’s historic centre, and Pena Palace at a comparable elevation. A visit takes 45 minutes to 1 hour.

National Palace of Sintra

The National Palace of Sintra is located in the town’s central square (Praça da República). It is the oldest continuously used royal palace in Portugal, with origins traced to a 10th-century Moorish residence on the same site. King João I of Portugal initiated major reconstruction around 1415.

King Manuel I added significant sections in the early 16th century, including Manueline decorative elements. The palace served as a royal residence until 1910.

The two conical chimneys — 33 m tall — are among the most recognisable features of Portuguese royal architecture, built to ventilate the medieval palace kitchens. Notable interior rooms include: the Swan Room (Sala dos Cisnes), with a gilded ceiling featuring 27 painted swans commissioned by João I; the Magpie Room (Sala das Pegas), with 136 painted magpies holding a scroll; and the Arab Room (Sala Árabe), featuring Moorish tile panels dating to the late 15th century. A visit takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

Admission: Not included in tour price. Check current prices at parquesdesintra.pt. Please get in touch with us before purchasing any tickets.

Monserrate Palace

Monserrate Palace is located 4 km from Sintra’s historic centre, within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The current structure was commissioned by Sir Francis Cook (1817–1901), a British textile magnate who acquired the ruined estate in 1856 and spent approximately 30 years rebuilding it. It incorporates Moorish-Gothic-Indian design with three decorative domes inspired by the Cathedral of Florence. The surrounding gardens cover 30 hectares and contain over 3,000 plant species from every continent except Antarctica. Monserrate receives significantly fewer visitors than Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, making it a quieter alternative for groups seeking to avoid peak crowds. A visit takes approximately 1 hour. Admission: Not included in tour price. Check current prices at parquesdesintra.pt.

Quinta da Regaleira (Palace & Gardens)

Quinta da Regaleira is located in Sintra’s historic town centre, a 15-minute walk from the National Palace. The property was commissioned by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848–1920) — a Lisbon-born merchant known as Monteiro dos Milhões (Millionaire Monteiro), who built his fortune in Brazil through coffee and diamond trading. Construction ran from 1898 to 1910.

The architect was Luigi Manini, an Italian stage designer who worked for the São Carlos National Theatre in Lisbon. Manini designed the buildings in neo-Manueline, neo-Gothic, and neo-Renaissance styles, incorporating references to Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, and the Knights Templar into the stonework and garden plan.

The property covers 4 hectares and includes a palace, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat, grottoes, lakes, a cascade, a belvedere tower, and an extensive network of underground tunnels. The Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático) is 27 m deep, with a spiral staircase descending through 9 landings. Tunnels from the base of the well connect to other points of the estate. The symbolism of the nine levels is typically interpreted as a reference to Dante’s nine circles of the Inferno. Quinta da Regaleira was classified as part of the UNESCO Cultural Landscape of Sintra in 1995.

A guided visit with access to the Initiation Well takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

Admission: Not included in tour price. Check current prices at regaleira.pt. Please get in touch with us before purchasing any tickets.

Queluz National Palace (Optional Stop)

The National Palace of Queluz stands in Queluz, 15 km northwest of Lisbon on the direct road to Sintra — making it a natural first stop on the outward journey or a final stop on the return. It is one of the last great Rococo palaces built in Europe.

Construction began in 1747 as a summer retreat commissioned by Dom Pedro (1717–1786), younger brother of King José I. Dom Pedro later married his niece Queen Maria I, becoming King Peter III of Portugal jure uxoris. Three architects oversaw successive construction phases: Mateus Vicente de Oliveira (from 1747), Jean-Baptiste Robillion (1760–1782, responsible for the gardens and ceremonial interiors), and Manuel Caetano de Sousa (1784–1792). The palace was substantially complete by 1789.

After a fire destroyed the royal palace in Ajuda in 1794, Queluz became the official residence of the Portuguese royal family. Queen Maria I (1734–1816) spent her final decades here following her mental breakdown. The palace was classified as a National Monument in 1910. A fire in 1934 destroyed part of the interior; subsequent restoration returned it to its pre-fire condition.

The gardens are designed in the French formal style: clipped box hedges, fountains, statuary, and a canal lined with 18th-century blue-and-white azulejo tile panels depicting maritime scenes. Notable interior rooms include the Throne Room, the Hall of Ambassadors, and the Music Room. Despite its scale — significantly smaller than Versailles — the palace is considered the finest example of Rococo architecture in Portugal. A visit takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

Entrance tickets to the palaces are not included in the tour price. All require timed-entry pre-booking — purchase online 2–4 weeks in advance during April–October. Your guide will advise which sites match your group’s interests. Current prices are available at parquesdesintra.pt and regaleira.pt.

Departure from Lisbon is at 08:30-09:00. The earlier start is intentional: Pena Palace receives its peak visitor volume between 11:00 and 14:00 from April to October. Arriving before 10:00 reduces waiting time at the entrance significantly.

Per vehicle. A group of 2 pays €275 total (€138 per person). A group of 4 pays €320 total (€80 per person). A group of 5–8 pays €450 total (between €56 and €90 per person depending on group size).

This is a private tour for your group only. The vehicle accommodates up to 8 people. No other guests join your tour.

Yes. Winter visits (December–February) mean shorter queues at all palaces and same-day ticket availability. The Serra de Sintra is cold at altitude (5–8°C) and subject to Atlantic rain — warm layers and a waterproof outer layer are recommended. The palaces are fully accessible and heated year-round.

For July and August, book the tour at least 2–3 weeks in advance. For April–June and September–October, 1 week is generally sufficient. Palace tickets should be booked independently before the tour date — tickets sell out faster than tour availability.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your tour date. Cancellations within 24 hours of departure are non-refundable.

Great out to Sintra and Cascais with our fantastic guide Catarina. She was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic with a great sense of humour. The trip is stunning along the coast and on to Sintra which is utterly charming. Peña Palace is a must. Highly recommend this trip and this company. And added bonus of YellowcabTT is the personalised pick up at the hotel rather than a set meeting point.
