Tour overview

This full-day private tour from Lisbon covers three of Portugal’s most visited destinations in a single 8-hour day: Nazaré (120 km north of Lisbon on the Silver Coast, site of the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed – 26.21 m / 86 ft set by Sebastian Steudtner on 29 October 2020), Óbidos (a medieval walled town captured by the first King of Portugal in 1148, with a 1,565 m perimeter wall standing 13 m high), and Sintra (28 km west of Lisbon, UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape since 1995, with palaces built across four centuries on a granite ridge reaching 529 m).

The tour is 100% private – your group, your vehicle, your licensed driver-guide. No strangers, no fixed group schedule. The route goes north from Lisbon along the A8 motorway to the Silver Coast in the morning, returns through Óbidos at midday, then cuts west to Sintra in the afternoon before returning to Lisbon. Total driving is approximately 280 km.

This route is the most efficient way to combine Nazaré’s Atlantic spectacle, Óbidos’ medieval centre, and Sintra’s UNESCO landscape in a single day. Competitors typically split this into two separate days or offer these destinations in large-group bus tours. The private format means your guide adapts time at each stop to what your group most wants to see – whether that is the wave viewpoint at Nazaré, the full wall circuit at Óbidos, or a specific monument at Sintra.

What You Can See

Nazaré – Where the Record Wave Was Set

Nazaré is where the world-record wave was filmed – 26.21 m surfed by Sebastian Steudtner on 29 October 2020, generated by a submarine canyon that begins less than 1 km from the cliff where you’re standing. The town divides into three distinct neighbourhoods: Praia (the beach-level village along a 2.5 km main beach), Pederneira (a hilltop settlement), and Sítio – the historic upper village on a promontory 110 m above sea level.

Sítio is reached via the Nazaré Funicular – a 318 m inclined railway built in 1889 by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel. From the top, the view extends the full length of Nazaré’s main beach and north to Praia do Norte, where world-record waves break.

At the northern tip of Sítio stands the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, built in 1577 to defend the coast against pirate raids. The fort now houses the lighthouse and serves as the primary elevated viewpoint for Praia do Norte surf events.

The wave record: Praia do Norte sits above the Nazaré Canyon  Europe’s largest submarine canyon, 230 km long and reaching approximately 5,000 m depth at the Iberian Abyssal Plain. The canyon amplifies North Atlantic swells through constructive interference. The current Guinness World Record stands at 26.21 m (86 ft), set by Sebastian Steudtner at Praia do Norte on 29 October 2020 and officially confirmed by the World Surf League in May 2022. In February 2024, Steudtner surfed a wave at the same location measured at approximately 28.5 m – official GWR confirmation pending as of June 2026.

Big waves occur from November through March. Between April and October, Praia do Norte is a calm beach.

Óbidos – The Queens’ Walled Town

Óbidos is the midpoint stop on this route – a fully intact medieval town where the entire 1,565 m wall circuit is walkable in 30 minutes and the only money spent is on Ginja de Óbidos cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup.

The name derives from the Latin oppidum – “fortified town.” The Moors built the first castle and enclosure walls in the 8th century. In 1148, King Afonso Henriques captured Óbidos during the same southward military campaign that took Lisbon from Moorish control. In 1282, King Dinis I gave the town as a wedding gift to Queen Isabel of Aragon, beginning a tradition that made Óbidos part of the Portuguese queens’ dowry for five centuries. The town is still known as Vila das Rainhas – the Village of the Queens.

The perimeter wall stretches 1,565 m and stands 13 m high. The full circuit is walkable in 30–45 minutes. Some outer sections have no handrail – standard shoes and care are sufficient. The castle at the north end has operated as a state heritage hotel (Pousada) since 1950. In 2007, Óbidos was voted one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal in the village category. In 2015, UNESCO designated the town a Creative City of Literature.

Ginja de Óbidos: Cherry liqueur made from Morello cherries macerated in aguardente with cinnamon and cloves – a recipe traced to Cistercian monks of the region in the 17th century. Served in Óbidos in an edible chocolate cup, a format introduced in 1987 by Dário Pimpão on Rua Direita.

Sintra – UNESCO World Heritage Landscape

Sintra is the afternoon stop on this tour – and the one where most first-time visitors realise they’ve booked the wrong amount of time. Two hours covers the town centre, the exterior of Pena Palace at **487 m**, and the Moorish Castle ramparts; palace interiors across multiple monuments require a dedicated day – see the Sintra, Cabo da Roca & Cascais Tour for that.

The Serra de Sintra is a granite ridge reaching 529 m at Cruz Alta. In 1995, UNESCO inscribed the Cultural Landscape of Sintra as a World Heritage Site – the first European cultural landscape to receive this designation, recognising the concentration of palaces, gardens, and villas built on the mountain between the 9th and 20th centuries. The town falls within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park (established 1994, covering 145 km²).

Pena Palace was built between 1842 and 1854 by King Ferdinand II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on the ruins of a 15th-century monastery. Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Moorish Revival styles on a granite outcrop at 487 m – the silhouette visible from Lisbon on clear days. Entry: €20/adult (Palace+Park, timed tickets at parquesdesintra.pt).

Moorish Castle was built in the 8th and 9th centuries to control the mountain pass between Lisbon and the Atlantic. Afonso Henriques captured it in 1147. The wall circuit runs 450 m across four towers; from the ramparts, the view extends from Lisbon’s skyline to the Atlantic at Cabo da Roca (39 km west, the westernmost point of continental Europe). Entry: €12/adult.

Quinta da Regaleira was built between 1904 and 1910 by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (“Monteiro dos Milhões”), designed by architect Luigi Manini. The signature feature is the Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático) – a 27 m inverted tower spiral staircase descending into the rock, connected to underground tunnels with Templar and Rosicrucian symbolic elements. Entry: €20/adult.

Sintra town centre clusters around the National Palace, whose twin conical chimneys (built over the medieval royal kitchen, height approximately 33 m) are the most recognisable landmark of the Sintra skyline. The palace dates from the 14th century and was the primary summer residence of the Portuguese royal family until the early 20th century. The central square is a 15-minute walk from the railway station.

Charming tour, Pedro and Paula are the best tourist guides in the world! They made the experience the best possible, undoubtedly unforgettable moments❤️

Emilio, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. As a surfer himself, he provided so much insight into the natural history of Naraze. I would have given 5 stars except that we had very limited time at Obidos. That may have been because there was a festival occurring and there were lots of locals there as well as the fortress was absolutely packed.
Marcio Biter
Sensational the guide!!!!! Had patience in the direction and provided us with a walk with a lot of safety and tranquility. The guide Madalena Marques is spectacular. It gave us a wonderful day. It took us to a wonderful restaurant with a perfect service. Finally, he told us about the history of the region and Portugal as a whole. Thank you very much

The tour was simply amazing, from beginning to end! Pretty, magical! Our Guide, Maria Madalena, has an extensive knowledge of the history of Portugal and the peculiarities of each place we visit, and it is important to explain everything calmly and in detail. I went with my mom, and we both managed to enjoy the day the best way! We are coming home full of good memories and beautiful photos, thanks to Maria's patience and skill for the records! Amei, note a thousand!

My family and I had the pleasure of doing three tours with Paula from Yellow Cab TT Tours, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Paula is incredibly energetic, kind, and always went out of her way to ensure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves. Also, our initial contact, Fábio, was super accommodating and responsive to our questions. If you’re looking to explore regions of Portugal beyond Lisbon, I can’t recommend these tours enough!
