Tour Overview

This private tour covers three destinations in one day: Nazaré on Portugal’s Silver Coast (120 km north of Lisbon), the medieval walled town of Óbidos (80 km north), and Lisbon city highlights on the return. The morning goes to the Atlantic coast; the afternoon brings you back through history.

Nazaré is where the Nazaré Canyon ends – an underwater canyon 230 km long and approximately 5,000 m deep that amplifies North Atlantic swells into the largest surfed waves on record. Óbidos is a medieval fortified town whose entire perimeter wall – 1,565 m of limestone, standing 13 m high – is intact and walkable today. The Lisbon segment covers approximately 75–90 minutes in the late afternoon: one focused area (Alfama or Belém) adapted to what your group has or hasn’t already seen.

No other operator offers this specific combination in a single private vehicle day from Lisbon. The Fátima and Sintra routes are well-served; the Silver Coast + Lisbon city orientation in one private tour is not.

Why Travellers Choose This Tour

  • 3,387 verified reviews · 5.0 Tripadvisor – Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best 2025; highest-rated private tour operator from Lisbon on the platform.
  • No competitor offers this exact three-destination combination – Nazaré + Óbidos + Lisbon city in a single private vehicle day. Standard Silver Coast tours stay on the coast; Lisbon city tours stay in the city
  • Praia do Norte: the only wave site with a verified world record – current Guinness World Record: 26.21 m (86 ft), set by Sebastian Steudtner on 29 October 2020. The viewpoint from Fort São Miguel Arcanjo (1577) is accessible year-round, not just during storm season.
  • Óbidos wall circuit is free – no entrance ticket to walk the full 1,565 m perimeter. Most visitors don’t know it’s included at no cost.
  • RNAAT licence 119/2013. Languages: EN, ES, FR, PT. Operating since 2013

Tips for Visiting Nazaré & Óbidos

  • Wave season is November–March – and cannot be guaranteed on a specific day.
  • Big surf at Praia do Norte is generated by North Atlantic storm swells. The season runs November through March. Outside that window, Praia do Norte is a calm Atlantic beach with no surf activity. The Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo viewpoint and the canyon geography are visible and interesting year-round; the extreme wave events are seasonal and weather-dependent. If you want to see large surf, plan for November–February and check the forecast.
  • The Óbidos wall circuit is free – and worth doing.
  • There is no entrance fee to walk the full perimeter of the Óbidos walls (1,565 m). The walk takes 30–45 minutes at a steady pace. The wall top is 1–2 m wide; outer sections on some stretches have no handrail. Flat shoes. The views over the whitewashed town and the Lagoa de Óbidos (on clear days) make it the best vantage point in the village.
  • Ginja is €1–2, served in an edible chocolate cup – try it.
  • The Ginja de Óbidos (cherry liqueur, Morello cherries macerated in aguardente) is served in an edible dark chocolate cup on Rua Direita. This format was introduced in 1987 by Dário Pimpão. It is neither a tourist gimmick nor expensive – it is genuinely the local way to drink it. The guide will direct you to the established shops.
  • For the Lisbon segment: decide one area in advance.
  • The afternoon allows approximately 75–90 minutes in Lisbon – enough for Alfama (Nossa Senhora do Monte miradouro + street walk) or Belém (Jerónimos exterior + Tower + Monument to the Discoveries), but not both in depth. Tell the guide your preference when booking. For guests who have not yet seen either area, Belém is typically prioritised because the monuments are concentrated in a compact waterfront zone.
  • Jerónimos in Belém – advance tickets only if entering inside.
  • The exterior of Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém esplanade (Tower, Monument to Discoveries) are accessible without tickets and are the standard stop on this tour. If you want to enter the monastery interior (€18/person, tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões), book at patrimoniocultural.gov.pt before the tour – the guide will adjust timing accordingly.

What You Can See

Nazaré – Praia do Norte & The Wave Record

Praia do Norte is where the Nazaré Canyon ends – and where the biggest surfed waves on record begin.

The Nazaré Canyon is Europe’s largest submarine canyon: approximately 230 km long and reaching approximately 5,000 m depth at the Iberian Abyssal Plain. The canyon begins less than 1 km offshore from Praia do Norte. When North Atlantic storm swells travel south and encounter the canyon, the wave energy is focused and amplified through constructive interference – producing waves significantly larger than anywhere else along the Portuguese coast at the same swell height.

The current Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed stands at 26.21 m (86 ft), set by German surfer Sebastian Steudtner at Praia do Norte on 29 October 2020 and confirmed in May 2022. On 24 February 2024, Steudtner surfed a wave measured at 28.57 m (93.73 ft) at the same location – pending GWR confirmation. On 19 December 2025, Brazilian big-wave surfer Rodrigo Koxa rode a wave measured at approximately 29.15 m (95.6 ft) at Nazaré – also pending official GWR confirmation. GWR is now the sole validating authority for big-wave records from the 2025/2026 season onward.

Big-wave surf events occur November through March, driven by North Atlantic storms. Between April and October, Praia do Norte is a calm beach with safe swimming.

Nazaré Sítio is the upper village on a promontory 110 m above sea level. The Nazaré Funicular, a 318 m inclined railway built in 1889, connects the beach-level town to Sítio in approximately 2 minutes. At the northern tip of Sítio stands the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, built in 1577 to defend the coast against pirate raids. The fort now houses the lighthouse and provides the primary elevated viewpoint over Praia do Norte – the vantage point used by photographers at every major big-wave event.

Óbidos – The Wall You Can Walk

Óbidos still has its complete medieval wall circuit. Not a restoration. Not a replica. The same 1,565 m of limestone fortification that King Dinis I gave to Queen Isabel of Aragon as a wedding gift in 1282 – a tradition that made Óbidos part of the Portuguese queens’ dowry for the next five centuries. The town is known as Vila das Rainhas – the Village of the Queens.

The Moors built the original castle and enclosure walls in the 8th century. In 1148, King Afonso Henriques captured Óbidos during the same southward military campaign that took Lisbon. The perimeter wall stands  and is 1–2 m wide at the top. The full circuit takes 30–45 minutes on foot. The castle at the north end has operated as a state heritage hotel (Pousada) since 1950.

In 2007, Óbidos was voted one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal (village category). In 2015, UNESCO designated Óbidos a Creative City of Literature – one of eight such cities in Portugal.

Ginja de Óbidos: Cherry liqueur made from Morello cherries (*Prunus cerasus austera*) macerated in aguardente with cinnamon and cloves. The recipe traces to Cistercian monks of the region in the 17th century. In Óbidos, it is served in an edible dark chocolate cup – a format introduced in 1987 by Dário Pimpão on Rua Direita. Cost: approximately €1–2 per cup.

Lisbon Highlights – Alfama & Belém

The afternoon Lisbon segment is deliberately selective. This tour is about the Atlantic coast – Nazaré and Óbidos take the morning. The late afternoon gives approximately 75–90 minutes for one focused area of the city. For the full Lisbon experience, the Lisbon City Tour dedicates 8 hours to the capital alone.

Alfama option: Lisbon’s oldest quarter, with Moorish street layout dating to the 8th–11th century. The neighbourhood survived the 1 November 1755 earthquake (magnitude 8.7–9.0, approximately 60,000–100,000 deaths) because it sits on schist and granite bedrock rather than the alluvial soil of the lower city. Nossa Senhora do Monte is the highest miradouro in Lisbon at 102 m – views extend from the Expo 98 waterfront in the east to Belém in the west. São Jorge Castle (exterior): hilltop fortification at 100 m altitude, Moorish origin 8th–11th century, captured 1147.

Belém option: Age of Discovery waterfront 6 km west of the city centre. Jerónimos Monastery: construction began 1501, UNESCO 1983, tombs of Vasco da Gama (died 24 December 1524) and Luís de Camões (died c. 10 June 1580). Belém Tower: built 1514–1521, UNESCO 1983; reopened May 2026, timed entry, max 900 visitors/day. Monument to the Discoveries: unveiled October 1960, 52 m, 33 figures. Pastéis de Belém bakery: open since 1837, original custard tart recipe from the dissolved Jerónimos monastery.

The guide confirms the focus area at booking and adjusts based on what your group has already seen.

FAQ

Is this a private tour?
Yes. Only your group travels in the vehicle — up to 8 passengers. No other travellers join at any point during the day.
It depends on the season and weather. Big surf at Praia do Norte is generated by North Atlantic storm swells between November and March — it cannot be guaranteed on a specific date. The current Guinness World Record stands at 26.21 m (86 ft), set by Sebastian Steudtner on 29 October 2020. Between April and October, Praia do Norte is a calm beach. The Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo viewpoint (1577) and the Nazaré Canyon geography are accessible and relevant year-round.
The Silver Coast Tour replaces the Lisbon segment with two additional coastal stops: São Martinho do Porto (shell-shaped bay, 3 km calm beach) and Foz do Arelho (Lagoa de Óbidos, 6.9 km², the largest coastal lagoon in Portugal). Choose this tour if you want the Silver Coast combined with a Lisbon orientation; choose the Silver Coast Tour if you prefer more time on the coast.
Yes. There is no entrance fee to walk the full 1,565 m perimeter of the Óbidos walls. Flat shoes recommended — some sections are narrow and uneven.
Nazaré’s Sítio is accessible by funicular. The Fort viewpoint involves a short flat walk. The Óbidos wall circuit requires climbing to the wall top (steep steps at access points) and walking on an uneven surface — guests with limited mobility may prefer to walk Rua Direita below the walls instead. The Lisbon segment (Alfama, Belém esplanade) involves some cobblestone walking. Mention any mobility needs at booking.
08:30–09:00 at your hotel or accommodation in Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Estoril, or anywhere along the coast.
Yes within the structure of the three-destination route. Priorities within each stop (more time in Óbidos vs Nazaré; Alfama vs Belém in Lisbon) are confirmed at booking. The guide adapts on the day.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice are non-refundable.

What Our Guests Say

Charming tour, Pedro and Paula are the best tourist guides in the world! They made the experience the best possible, undoubtedly unforgettable moments❤️
Paula M
Emilio, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. As a surfer himself, he provided so much insight into the natural history of Naraze. I would have given 5 stars except that we had very limited time at Obidos. That may have been because there was a festival occurring and there were lots of locals there as well as the fortress was absolutely packed.
Marcio Biter
Sensational the guide!!!!! Had patience in the direction and provided us with a walk with a lot of safety and tranquility. The guide Madalena Marques is spectacular. It gave us a wonderful day. It took us to a wonderful restaurant with a perfect service. Finally, he told us about the history of the region and Portugal as a whole. Thank you very much
Natália G
The tour was simply amazing, from beginning to end! Pretty, magical! Our Guide, Maria Madalena, has an extensive knowledge of the history of Portugal and the peculiarities of each place we visit, and it is important to explain everything calmly and in detail. I went with my mom, and we both managed to enjoy the day the best way! We are coming home full of good memories and beautiful photos, thanks to Maria's patience and skill for the records! Amei, note a thousand!

My family and I had the pleasure of doing three tours with Paula from Yellow Cab TT Tours, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Paula is incredibly energetic, kind, and always went out of her way to ensure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves. Also, our initial contact, Fábio, was super accommodating and responsive to our questions. If you’re looking to explore regions of Portugal beyond Lisbon, I can’t recommend these tours enough!
