Tour Overview

This private wine tour from Lisbon reaches the Setúbal Peninsula in approximately 45 minutes (40 km south via the A2 motorway and Ponte 25 de Abril). The peninsula holds two separate DOC designations: Setúbal DOC, covering fortified Moscatel wines from Muscat of Alexandria grapes aged a minimum of 18 months, and Palmela DOC, covering table wines.
The tour is 100% private: your group, your vehicle, your licensed driver-guide. Wine add-on level (+€35/+€55/+€85 per person) is selected at booking. Option 2 adds a traditional azulejo tile factory visit; Option 3 includes visits to two separate cellar producers.

Why Travellers Choose This Private Tour

  • Moscatel de Setúbal – minimum 18 months barrel-aged fortified wine from Muscat of Alexandria; premium 20-year aged versions rarely available outside Portugal.
  • Option 2 azulejo tile factory visit – the only wine tour combining a cellar visit with a traditional tile craft demonstration (hand-painted, metal oxide pigments, fired at 1,000°C).
  • Option 3: two separate cellar visits at different producers – the only experience in our programme allowing direct side-by-side comparison of Moscatel styles in one day.
  • Licensed operator access to Arrábida Natural Park year-round.

Tips for This Tour

Choose your option before booking. Option 1 is a wine shop tasting – right for an introduction to Moscatel without a full cellar experience. Option 2 adds the azulejo tile factory. Option 3 is for guests who specifically want to compare different Moscatel producers side by side – duration extends to up to 2 hours for the wine experience alone.

September-October is the harvest window. Muscat of Alexandria grapes are harvested in September and early October. Winery visits during this period may include observation of the fortification process – the step that creates Moscatel’s sweetness. Book 5–7 days in advance.

Arrábida road access is not an issue for our tours. As a licensed operator with a municipal card, our vehicles access the route year-round – guests do not need to plan travel dates around this restriction.

Non-drinkers are welcome. Non-alcoholic alternatives at winery visits on request. The Arrábida drive and Setúbal sightseeing are identical regardless of wine option selected.

Moscatel de Setúbal – Portugal’s Most Distinctive Fortified Wine

The Setúbal Peninsula lies 40 km south of Lisbon. It holds two separate DOC designations: Setúbal DOC, which covers fortified wines made from Muscat of Alexandria (Moscatel) grapes, and Palmela DOC, which covers table wines. Moscatel de Setúbal is a fortified wine made by adding neutral grape spirit at mid-fermentation – the same process used to make Port wine. This stops fermentation, retaining unfermented grape sugar and creating a naturally sweet, alcohol-fortified wine.

Minimum barrel ageing for Moscatel de Setúbal is 18 months. Premium versions are aged 10, 20, or even longer – older vintages develop deep amber colour with complex flavours of dried fig, orange peel, roasted coffee, and caramel. Setúbal Peninsula winemakers have documented the production of this style since at least the 17th century.

The region’s main red variety is Castelão (historically marketed as Periquita, the José Maria da Fonseca brand name that became a regional synonym) — a grape that produces tannic, earthy wines adapted to the sandy and clay soils of the peninsula. Castelão accounts for the majority of red wine production in the Palmela DOC.

Azeitão is the main wine village of the Setúbal Peninsula. Besides wine, Azeitão is known for its Queijo de Azeitão – a soft, runny sheep’s milk cheese with DOP designation since 1996, produced within a restricted zone of three municipalities (Setúbal, Palmela, Sesimbra).

We take wine groups to a working winery in the Setúbal DOC area – the specific producer varies based on your booking date and harvest schedule. The winery visit takes approximately 1 to 2 hours. For Option 2, the visit also includes a stop at a traditional azulejo tile factory in the Azeitão area.

What You Can See

Azeitão Wine Village

Azeitão (officially Azeitão, comprising the parishes of São Lourenço and São Simão) sits approximately 35 km southeast of Lisbon in the Setúbal municipality. The village is associated with wine production since at least the 18th century, when it was a key estate area for noble families from Lisbon. Today it retains a walled estate character, with quintas and wine estates lining the main road between the two parishes.

Beyond wine, Azeitão is known for its pastry shop Azeitão – torta de Azeitão is a thin egg-yolk roll cake specific to the village and is sold in the village’s cafes. The Queijo de Azeitão cheese (DOP) can be purchased directly in village shops.

The Azulejo Tile Factory (Option 2)

Option 2 on this tour includes a visit to a traditional azulejo tile factory in the Azeitão area. Azulejo tile production has been practiced in Portugal since the 15th century – the word azulejo derives from the Arabic *al-zulayj* (polished stone). Traditional hand-painted tiles use a tin-glaze process: the tile is coated with an opaque white glaze, painted by hand with metal oxide pigments (cobalt for blue, manganese for brown), then fired at approximately 1,000°C.

Factory visits include a demonstration of the hand-painting process. This is one of two experiences in our entire programme that combines wine and traditional craft heritage in the same day (the other is the cork factory on the Alentejo tour).

We do not publicly name the specific factory – we work with partners based on availability. Your guide confirms the details before the tour.

Arrábida Natural Park

The Arrábida Natural Park was established in 1976 and covers 17,641 hectares (including 5,311 hectares of marine territory) of the Setúbal Peninsula’s southern coast. The park protects the Serra da Arrábida mountain range (highest point: Formosinho, 501 m), which runs parallel to the Atlantic coast and creates a protected microclimate on its south-facing slopes.

The drive through the park follows the coastal road above the Atlantic cliffs – limestone formations dropping to clear turquoise water. This stretch of the EN379-1 road includes viewpoints above Portinho da Arrábida (a sheltered bay with calm, transparent water) and Praia de Galapinhos (consistently ranked among the cleanest beaches in Portugal by national environmental surveys).

Setúbal Town

Setúbal is a port city at the mouth of the Sado estuary. Population: approximately 120,000 (municipality). The town’s main market, Mercado do Livramento (founded 1876, current Art Deco building 1930, interior tiled façade), is one of the most photographed covered markets in Portugal outside Lisbon. The Sado estuary hosts Portugal’s only resident bottlenose dolphin pod – approximately 27 named individuals observed year-round.

The Wine Experience

The wine experience is a dedicated winery visit in the Setúbal DOC area, lasting approximately 1 to 2 hours. It is scheduled in the morning before the coastal and Arrábida stops.

We work with several partner wineries in the Setúbal region and select based on your booking date. The specific producer varies with harvest schedule and seasonal availability. During harvest (September–October), visits may include observation of the pressing or must fermentation process.

Option 1 (€35/person): Tasting at a local wine shop in the Azeitão or Setúbal area. You’ll try 3–4 wines – typically Moscatel de Setúbal (at least one age level), a Castelão red, and a white – with a local pastry (torta de Azeitão). Duration: approximately 45–60 minutes.

Option 2 (€55/person): Full winery visit: cellar tour, guided tasting of 4–6 wines paired with tapas (local cheese, charcuterie), and a pastry. Also includes a visit to a traditional azulejo tile factory – the only wine tour option in Portugal that combines a cellar visit with a hands-on tile craft demonstration. Duration: approximately 1.5 hours total (winery + factory).

Option 3 (€85/person): Two separate cellar visits at different wineries in the Setúbal DOC area – this is the only experience in our entire programme where you visit two different producers on the same day. Each visit includes a tasting; one includes a full tapas service. Pastry included. Duration: approximately 1.5–2 hours total. Recommended for serious wine travellers who want to compare different styles of Moscatel de Setúbal.

Best Time of Year for This Tour

This tour runs year-round. The Moscatel de Setúbal production cycle has distinct windows that affect what you see and taste at the winery.

September–October (Moscatel harvest): Muscat of Alexandria grapes – the sole variety used in Moscatel de Setúbal – are harvested in September and early October on the Setúbal Peninsula, earlier at lower-elevation sandy clay vineyards. Fortification happens at mid-fermentation, typically 3–5 days after crushing: this is the only time of year when you can observe the actual addition of grape spirit that stops fermentation and creates the wine’s residual sweetness. Castelão red harvest follows, typically mid-September through mid-October. Book 5–7 days in advance during harvest – winery schedules shift with picking.

October–February (new vintage enters barrel): After fortification, the new Moscatel begins its minimum 18-month ageing period in barrel. Winery visits between October and February show two vintages in barrel simultaneously – the current year and the previous year, at different stages of development. The contrast between a 4-month-old Moscatel (amber, fresh, less concentrated) and a 2-year-old version (darker, dried fruit, caramel) is something your guide can illustrate with direct barrel samples.

April–June (bottled selection at its widest): No active fermentation, ageing underway. The tasting room selection is at its broadest – the full range from minimum-aged (18 months) to premium 20-year reserve is typically available. Temperatures 18–24°C. The Setúbal Peninsula is green; the vineyards in early vegetative growth show the Muscat vine character that distinguishes it from Castelão growing in the same soil.

July–August: The cellar visit is unaffected by outdoor temperatures – Moscatel ages at approximately 16–18°C in the barrel room regardless of outside conditions. The main adjustment is booking lead time: 2–3 weeks in advance.

November–March: The vines are dormant. The youngest Moscatel in barrel is now 2–4 months old, the previous vintage is approaching its bottling window. Cellar visit schedules are at their quietest – extended tastings including aged reserves more readily available than in peak season.

FAQ

Moscatel de Setúbal is a fortified wine from the Setúbal Peninsula, 40 km south of Lisbon. It is made from Muscat of Alexandria grapes, fortified with neutral grape spirit at mid-fermentation (the same process as Port wine), then aged in barrels. Minimum ageing is 18 months; premium versions are aged 20 or more years. The wine is naturally sweet with flavours of dried fruit, orange, and caramel.
Option 2 includes a visit to a traditional azulejo tile factory in the Azeitão area. You’ll see the hand-painting process: tiles are coated with white glaze, hand-painted with metal oxide pigments, and fired at approximately 1,000°C. A demonstration is included. We do not publicly name the factory — your guide confirms it before the tour.
Option 3 on the Setúbal tour is the only experience in our programme with visits to two different producers in one day. This allows you to compare different styles and ages of Moscatel de Setúbal side by side — for example, a young 6-month version against an aged 10-year version. Recommended for guests who want a serious comparative tasting.
Private cars are banned on the EN379-1 coastal road between Portinho da Arrábida and Setúbal from 7 June to 15 September (07:00–19:00) under the Arrábida O2 programme. Licensed tour operators with municipal cards are exempt — we can access the route year-round. Our vehicles carry up to 8 passengers, within the permitted limit for this road at all times.
We work with several partner wineries in the Setúbal DOC area and select based on availability and your booking date. We do not publicly name specific producers. Your guide confirms the winery in advance of your tour.
Per vehicle: €310 (1–3 passengers), €360 (4–5 passengers), €490 (6–8 passengers). Wine add-ons per person: +€35, +€55, or +€85. Example: 4 people, Option 2 = €360 + 4×€55 = €580 total = €145/person.
Castelão (marketed as Periquita, the José Maria da Fonseca brand name that became a regional synonym) is the principal red grape of the Setúbal Peninsula. It produces tannic, earthy red wines with a distinctive mineral character from the sandy-clay soils of the peninsula. It is different in style from both the Alentejo reds (which are fuller and richer) and Douro reds (which are more structured). Usually included in the tastings alongside Moscatel.
September–October (harvest) is the most active period — winery visits may include pressing observation. April–June offers mild temperatures and open coastal roads. Summer (July–August) is possible year-round; the Arrábida road restriction does not affect licensed operators.
Yes. Child seats on request (provide age and weight when booking). Non-alcoholic alternatives provided at tastings. The Arrábida coastal drive is suitable for all ages.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable.

What an amazing experience. We passed up Sintra to focus on Cascais and the coastline. It was STUNNING. What made it a forever memory was our guide, Paula. She greeted us like we were visiting family (whom she really liked) and was so warm, friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating that we would recommend her to anyone visiting Lisbon. She selected a restaurant for lunch that offered excellent food and service, coupled with stunning views of crashing waves. Thank you, Paula, my sister.

My wife and I went on a private tour for the first time. Originally we thought it was a bit expensive, but in the end it turned out that every euro was worth it. We liked the ocean view from Cabo da Roca and the visit to the castle in Sintra the most. Our companion, Catarina, provided the good mood and the very detailed explanations. We liked her from the very first moment, and we remain very grateful to her for contributing to an unforgettable trip. Thank you Catarina!
