Located in the Central region of Portugal, the village of Nazaré is a living postcard of Portuguese fishing tradition. For centuries, the sea has shaped not only the landscape but also the way of life of this community. The Nazaré we know today only took shape from the 18th century onward. Before that, the area that now forms the lower part of the village was dominated by the Atlantic waters, with only the top of the cliff — the Sítio — as the inhabited place.
This is a destination where faith, the sea, and popular culture intertwine. The strong Marian devotion of its inhabitants is reflected in religious monuments, such as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, built in honor of the Virgin after the legendary rescue of D. Fuas Roupinho, whose horse miraculously stopped at the edge of the abyss.
The Sítio of Nazaré and the Legend of the Miracle
The Sítio, a high place with stunning views over the village and the sea, is the stage of the most famous local legend. It is said that D. Fuas, while chasing a deer during a hunt, almost fell off the cliff but was saved by divine intervention. In gratitude, he ordered the construction of the Ermida da Memória, a small chapel lined with tiles that narrate the story of the miracle.
Next to it stands the imposing Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré. The baroque interior houses an image of the Virgin and Child and is covered with 18th-century tiles illustrating biblical scenes. One side of the temple holds a large painting depicting the famous miracle.
Nazaré Culture and Tradition
In Nazaré, tradition is lived vividly — and visibly through clothing. Women wear the typical seven-layered skirts, lace blouses, and colorful scarves, while men wear thick trousers, checkered shirts, and wool caps. This visual identity is one of the village’s trademarks.
Even today, it is possible to see women drying fish in the sun, especially horse mackerel, on traditional racks along the beach. This practice gave rise to the Living Museum of Dried Fish, where visitors can witness all stages of the process, from preparation to drying.
Art, History, and Tradition in the Museums
The Dr. Joaquim Manso Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum, located in the Sítio, displays a diverse collection ranging from prehistory to traditional clothing. Miniature boats, religious objects, and references to Marian devotion are just some of the elements that help understand Nazaré’s soul.
The Reitor Luís Nési Museum of Sacred Art, located near the Sanctuary, offers religious artifacts, liturgical vestments, and mantles dedicated to the local patroness.
From the Fort to the Beach: Nazaré and Giant Surf
The Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, built in 1577, today serves as a privileged viewpoint for Praia do Norte and its famous giant waves. It houses the Interpretive Center of the Nazaré Canyon, a submarine geological formation responsible for the world’s largest surfed waves.
This beach gained fame when surfer Garrett McNamara rode a nearly 24-meter wave in 2011. Years later, Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa surpassed this feat with a 24.38-meter wave, earning the world record.
Panoramic Views and Unique Experiences
For those wishing to explore Nazaré at a relaxed pace, the funicular that connects the Sítio to the lower part of the village offers a scenic trip with views over the houses and beach. Not far from there is the Baloiço da Ladeira, a perfect spot for memorable photos.
Walking along Avenida Marginal, one feels the maritime essence of Nazaré. Traditional boats, fishing nets spread out, and remnants of old fishing activities are living testimonies of a past that resists time.
Crafts and Local Identity
Local crafts are filled with references to the sea. Dolls dressed in traditional costumes, miniature boats, decorative shells, and other marine elements fill the village’s stalls and shops, perpetuating the connection between the Nazaré people and their ocean.
