Tomar

After the pick-up in Lisbon, we head to Tomar to visit the remarkable Castle and Convent of Christ, a site deeply connected to the Knights Templar. This city was part of a generous donation by Portugal’s first king, D. Afonso Henriques, offered in gratitude for the Templars’ support during the conquest of Moorish territory.

Not only did the Templars found the city of Tomar, but they also built this vast and intricate monument, which later became the headquarters of the Order of Christ, their spiritual successor. Blending a range of architectural styles—from Gothic to Manueline—the convent is filled with fascinating symbols and historical layers.

One of its most captivating features is the Charola, the original Templar rotunda, richly decorated and surrounded by mystery. This is truly a must-see destination for anyone interested in medieval history, architecture, or Portugal’s unique legacy.

Lisbon

We begin our journey in Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest and most traditional neighborhoods. Wander through its narrow alleys, feel the rhythm of daily life, and listen to the haunting sounds of Fado echoing from hidden taverns.

Next, we climb to Graça, perched on Lisbon’s highest hill. From the Senhora do Monte viewpoint, enjoy one of the city’s most stunning panoramic views. Nearby, discover the National Pantheon, where many notable Portuguese figures rest. If you’re lucky, you might catch the charm of Feira da LadraEurope’s oldest flea market, full of vintage finds and local flair.

We then continue to the iconic St. George Castle, where the city’s medieval history comes alive. Nearby, visit the Lisbon Cathedral, the oldest in the city, and the beloved Santo António Church, dedicated to Lisbon’s patron saint.

Heading downhill, the downtown area unfolds. Stroll along the elegant Rua Augusta, explore the grand Praça do Comércio, and dive into the energy of Chiado and Bairro Alto — neighborhoods full of charm, culture, and creativity.

Driving along Avenida da Liberdade, admire its grand architecture and luxury boutiques. Soon after, we pass the impressive Estrela Basilica and its tranquil gardens. Then, we cross the 25 de Abril Bridge, offering fantastic views of Lisbon from a new perspective — especially from the base of the towering Cristo Rei monument.

We end the day in Belém, the perfect place to relax and reflect. Taste the iconic Pastel de Belém, fresh from the original bakery. As a final highlight, marvel at the monumental Jerónimos Monastery, the historic Belém Tower, and the striking Monument to the Discoveries — all standing proudly along the peaceful riverside.

This tour is carefully crafted for a well-balanced and enriching day—but the pace and focus can adapt to your preferences.

First of all, Kate was a wonderful tour guide. Secondly, the Templar sires we visited were fascinating and beautiful. It was an altogether first rate experience. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in history.

Amazing tour, Kate was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. We visited all the sites that we wanted to, and even had lunch in a beautiful little sandwich shop in Tomar. These Yellow Cab private tours seem more expensive, but it was worth every penny as they stepped in last minute when our group tour operator cancelled last minute. I can’t recommend them enough and would only do private tours in the future. Outstanding!!

This is our second tour with this company. Our first tour was 4 years ago so I think it says something that we came back for a second tour. This time it was me, my husband, and his dad (there wasn't an option for "family" of adults so I guess "couple" +1?) Once again, we did a private tour and again, I think it was the best decision for us. We like having the little bit of wiggle room in terms of pace of sites and not having to wait on anyone else or have anyone else wait on us. We had a wonderful day with Jorge! My husband and his dad enjoyed all the extensive history information and chatting. The sites are beautiful and we had a delicious lunch and even got to pop in a couple of shops along the way around town. My FIL has bad knees and Jorge was sure to check in to make sure everyone was doing okay with the pace we were going at. I highly recommend this tour for the castle and history lovers and having Jorge as your guide!

We had amazing weather so Jorge was able to show us beautiful sights, tell us the history and answer all of our questions regarding the Knights Templar in Tomar. Jorge also shared a side street secret at lunch time of Peri Peri chicken. It was amazing and we shared a lot of conversation. This tour was a highlight of our trip.
