Founded in the 10th century, the Order of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, commonly known as the Templars, played a key role in the Crusades and battles for the conquest of Portuguese territory.

Having received several manors and properties from D. Afonso Henriques, he left us a vast and rich historical legacy, especially north of the Tejo River, where he developed a unique and effective fortified defense system.

It is in this region that we center our Historic Templar Route, visiting Tomar, Almourol, and Santarém.

Tomar

On this tour, we will visit Tomar and the Santa Maria dos Olivais Church. Built in the 12th century, it served as a pantheon where the Grand Masters of the Order were buried. Later, it was elevated to Order of Christ Cathedral, having under its purview all the churches in the territories found in Africa, Asia, and America.

Departing to discover the historic center of the city, we highlight the São João Baptista Church and the Republic Square with the statue of the founder of the city, Gualdim Pais. Here, you will learn a little more about the life and history of this picturesque city.

Going up, we will reach the Templar Castle and Christ Convent. This monumental complex, begun in 1160, spans the entire period of the Templar presence in our country and was the central command point of the fortified defense system, made up of several castles and watchtowers.

In the 15th century, the Order of Christ reused and modernized the old castle, creating one of the most intriguing and mysterious national monuments, the Christ Convent, classified in 1983 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, attracting the visitors to admire the misterious Charola, an one of a kind altar.

Almourol

Almourol Castle was erected around 1170 by the Portuguese Templar knights on a small island about 20 meters above water level and has strategic importance in the so-called Tejo Defensive Line.

Santarém

Heading south and enjoying the fields and plains of Ribatejo, we find Santarém. This city has, as one of its most emblematic monuments, the medieval wall of Portas do Sol and the Torre das Cabaças. From here, we will be able to appreciate the entire Ribatejo Plain, Tejo, and understand the strategic importance of this place.

Regresso a Lisboa

Filled with memories and good times, we will return to Lisboa, where we will drop you off at the place where you were installed.

First of all, Kate was a wonderful tour guide. Secondly, the Templar sires we visited were fascinating and beautiful. It was an altogether first rate experience. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in history.

Amazing tour, Kate was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. We visited all the sites that we wanted to, and even had lunch in a beautiful little sandwich shop in Tomar. These Yellow Cab private tours seem more expensive, but it was worth every penny as they stepped in last minute when our group tour operator cancelled last minute. I can’t recommend them enough and would only do private tours in the future. Outstanding!!

The most Experienced guides, excelent drivers and absolute the best historien knowledge you can ask for. I am so suprised that I felt I met a new friends for the future on the two days I spent with them. I strongly recomend their servesis, the yellow cab is the best. This is our second tour with this company. Our first tour was 4 years ago so I think it says something that we came back for a second tour. This time it was me, my husband, and his dad (there wasn't an option for "family" of adults so I guess "couple" +1?) Once again, we did a private tour and again, I think it was the best decision for us. We like having the little bit of wiggle room in terms of pace of sites and not having to wait on anyone else or have anyone else wait on us. We had a wonderful day with Jorge! My husband and his dad enjoyed all the extensive history information and chatting. The sites are beautiful and we had a delicious lunch and even got to pop in a couple of shops along the way around town. My FIL has bad knees and Jorge was sure to check in to make sure everyone was doing okay with the pace we were going at. I highly recommend this tour for the castle and history lovers and having Jorge as your guide!

We had amazing weather so Jorge was able to show us beautiful sights, tell us the history and answer all of our questions regarding the Knights Templar in Tomar. Jorge also shared a side street secret at lunch time of Peri Peri chicken. It was amazing and we shared a lot of conversation. This tour was a highlight of our trip.
