As a suggestion, our Évora Old Town Tour starts with a first stop in Évora, a historic city that is walled and has great religious influence. The entire city has been a World Heritage Site, an open-air museum according to UNESCO, since 1986. For centuries, the ancient walls protected people, cobbled streets, and buildings from different periods. This historical and cultural richness attracts more and more visitors.

Monsaraz

Standing proud and tall on the highest point of the Ossa Mountains, the Castle of Monsaraz is a symbol of resilience. Built by the Moors in the 10th century and conquered by the Portuguese in the 12th, Monsaraz is an historical and protected village, being kept as close as possible of its original look. There you visit the small craft shops of the local pottery artisans, and admire the wonderful view of the Alqueva Reservoir, the largest artificial lake of Europe with 250km2, up until the border with Spain.

Évora

In the historic center of Évora, it is perfectly possible to wander through all the narrow streets and alleys that lead to beautiful squares, such as the well-known Giraldo Square. Let yourself be surprised by the Roman Temple, also known as Diana’s Temple, which is around 2000 years old. Discover the religious influence in the many churches, such as the Cathedral of Évora and the São Francisco Church with the Bone Chapel. You will also find the Colégio do Espírito Santo, today’s Évora University, where the Jesuits taught. The tiles that can be seen inside are a fantastic representation of this Portuguese art.

Also visit the public garden and D. Manuel Palace. Find distant times in Évora’s many museums and national and international artists at the Eugénio de Almeida Art and Culture Center. Follow the Água de Prata Aqueduct to the fields or to reach the city. Wherever you go, the immaculate whitewash of the houses will follow you and remain in your memory forever. You will certainly not forget the friendly people of Alentejo either. Évora is a wonderful experience in itself.

Visit to Cork Factory

To enrich the experience, we include a stop at a family-run cork factory. Here, you’ll learn about one of Portugal’s most important industries. See how cork is harvested, treated, and transformed into eco-friendly products—from bottle stoppers to fashion accessories.

This behind-the-scenes visit offers insight into how tradition and sustainability go hand in hand in the Alentejo region.

Return to Lisbon

After a day immersed in history, culture, and craftsmanship, we begin our relaxing return to Lisbon. Take in the rolling landscapes of Alentejo one last time as we bring you back to your accommodation—ending the journey with comfort and care.

The itinerary is carefully curated to provide a rich and varied experience. However, the choice is always yours—enjoy this journey at your own pace, with the comfort of a private or small-group setting.

On 06/08/2024, we had the opportunity and pleasure to make our tour / visit to Évora with the Guide sent by you, Maria Magdalena. It was a lovely trip. Maria Magdalena demonstrated with sympathy and patience, knowledge of the history of Évora, thus addressing our curiosities regarding the historical and social facts that magnify the city and its surroundings. We had lunch together, giving us clarification even about Portuguese cuisine. Worth too much!!
