This Portuguese town was ranked as the best hidden gem in Europe for summer holidays

From the bustling streets of Barcelona to the steep climbs leading to Lisbon’s trendiest new restaurants, a sun-soaked European getaway can be just what the mind and body need. And while major cities continue to draw travellers with exciting new openings and vibrant energy, sometimes it truly pays to wander off the beaten track.

Recently, an analysis of lesser-known European destinations highlighted places that offer stunning scenery, delicious cuisine, rich cultural attractions and excellent value – all without the usual crowds. The selected spots were notably absent from the most searched-for destinations in Europe for summer 2025, meaning they remain well-kept secrets waiting to be explored.

The rankings considered factors such as natural beauty, authenticity, tourism potential, gastronomy quality and accommodation affordability.

Among the hidden gems discovered are charming French villages, peaceful Spanish coastal towns, medieval Italian hamlets and scenic corners of the UK.

Beaumaris, in Wales, stands out for its wild beaches and lush landscapes.

Labeaume in southern France delights with its stone houses, ancient castles and mysterious caves – all at very affordable prices.

Sibiu, in Romania, is gaining traction thanks to its historic centre and emerging arts scene.

Valdoviño in northwestern Spain remains under the radar, offering tranquil beaches perfect for a relaxing escape.

Beynac-et-Cazenac, in France’s Dordogne region, charms with postcard-worthy views and a pleasantly warm summer climate, while Bremm in Germany is a dream for wine lovers seeking serenity.

Puy-l’Évêque, a commune in southern France surrounded by greenery, blends natural beauty with medieval heritage. Nafplio, in Greece, offers a perfect mix of cultural landmarks and seaside escapes. Brisighella, in Italy, is a lovely historic village with winding streets and family-run restaurants – ideal for a peaceful and authentic break.

At the very top of the list is Tomar, in Portugal – a city rich in history tied to the Knights Templar, featuring unique traditions like the Festa dos Tabuleiros and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Still largely undiscovered by foreign tourists, Tomar stands out as one of Europe’s most promising and surprising destinations to explore.
