Located in the Central region of Portugal, the village of Nazar\u00e9 is a living postcard of Portuguese fishing tradition. For centuries, the sea has shaped not only the landscape but also the way of life of this community. The Nazar\u00e9 we know today only took shape from the 18th century onward. Before that, the area that now forms the lower part of the village was dominated by the Atlantic waters, with only the top of the cliff \u2014 the S\u00edtio \u2014 as the inhabited place.<\/p>

The strong Marian devotion of its inhabitants is reflected in religious monuments, such as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazar\u00e9, built in honor of the Virgin after the legendary rescue of D. Fuas Roupinho, whose horse miraculously stopped at the edge of the abyss.<\/p>

The S\u00edtio, a high place with stunning views over the village and the sea, is the stage of the most famous local legend. It is said that D. Fuas, while chasing a deer during a hunt, almost fell off the cliff but was saved by divine intervention. In gratitude, he ordered the construction of the Ermida da Mem\u00f3ria, a small chapel lined with tiles that narrate the story of the miracle.<\/p>

Next to it stands the imposing Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazar\u00e9. The baroque interior houses an image of the Virgin and Child and is covered with 18th-century tiles illustrating biblical scenes. One side of the temple holds a large painting depicting the famous miracle.<\/p>

Even today, it is possible to see women drying fish in the sun, especially horse mackerel, on traditional racks along the beach. This practice gave rise to the Living Museum of Dried Fish, where visitors can witness all stages of the process, from preparation to drying.<\/p>

The Dr. Joaquim Manso Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum, located in the S\u00edtio, displays a diverse collection ranging from prehistory to traditional clothing.
