The Monument to the Discoveries that stands on the Bel\u00e9m waterfront today is not the one that was built first. The original went up in 1940 for an exhibition, made of plaster, gypsum and burlap over a wood frame, designed to last a few months. It was torn down in 1943. The concrete version tourists photograph now \u2014 the one that looks permanent, monumental, carved from stone \u2014 is a replica completed in 1960, eighteen years after the first one was demolished.<\/p>\n

Most guides skip that detail and treat the monument as if it had stood there since the Age of Discovery itself. It has not. It is older than the 25 de Abril Bridge<\/a> visible from its viewing deck \u2014 the bridge opened in 1966, six years after the monument \u2014 and it commemorates events that were already four and a half centuries old by the time it was rebuilt in permanent form.<\/p>\n

This guide covers why the monument exists in two versions, who the 33 statues represent and why some of the choices are more complicated than the postcard version suggests, what is inside today, and the practical details \u2014 hours, tickets, and how to combine a visit with Bel\u00e9m Tower<\/a> and the Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery<\/a> next door.
