Bairro Alto has more bars and restaurants packed into it than any other district in Lisbon<\/a> \u2014 more than 300 of them, inside roughly half a square kilometre. For about twelve hours a day, most of them are closed.<\/p>\n

That contradiction is the whole neighbourhood. Guidebooks tend to file Bairro Alto under “nightlife district” and move on, which skips the more interesting part: this hill was one of the first planned neighbourhoods in Lisbon, laid out on a grid more than two centuries before Pombal made grid planning famous downtown, and it’s a district that \u2014 by its own Wikipedia entry’s account \u2014 came through the 1755 earthquake<\/a> “not significantly affected,” while the flat ground below it was flattened.<\/p>\n

I’ve been driving clients past Bairro Alto for over a decade \u2014 some in daylight, on the way to S\u00e3o Roque or the viewpoint at S\u00e3o Pedro de Alc\u00e2ntara, some at 9pm when they want to know where the actual Lisbon goes for dinner. Both versions of the neighbourhood are real, and they have almost nothing in common.
