Its name comes from the Arabic <strong>al-hamma<\/strong>, meaning &#8220;the baths&#8221; \u2014 a reference to the hot springs that the Moors used in this part of the city during the 8th to 12th centuries. Subsequent fires burned for three to five days. The death toll is estimated at 30,000 to 40,000 people.
