What was once a quiet fishing community is now the stage for a natural spectacle that attracts thousands of visitors: the giant waves that form at Praia do Norte.<\/p>

How it happens?<\/h2>

This phenomenon is the result of a unique underwater geological structure called the Nazar\u00e9 Canyon<\/strong> \u2014 a deep, narrow underwater trench extending about 200 kilometers beneath the sea. Through it, the energy from large ocean storms is channeled directly toward the coast. As the water moves through this natural corridor, the wave energy increases drastically, creating waves that can exceed 30 meters in height<\/strong>.<\/p>

The origin of these waves lies in storms occurring hundreds of kilometers away in the open ocean. When crossing the Nazar\u00e9 Canyon with few obstacles, the wave energy is almost entirely preserved until it reaches the coastline, where the seabed rises abruptly, compressing and lifting the water with immense force.<\/p>

The peak period for these waves typically occurs between October and March.<\/strong> However, their formation depends on specific conditions such as wind direction, wave intensity, and the duration of wave propagation. When all factors align, the result is a rare and gigantic spectacle.<\/p>
