On 19 December 2025, Brazilian big-wave surfer Rodrigo Koxa rode a wave measured at approximately 29.15 m (95.6 ft) at Nazar\u00e9 &#8211; also pending official GWR confirmation. GWR is now the sole validating authority for big-wave records from the 2025\/2026 season onward.<\/p><p>Big-wave surf events occur <strong>November through March<\/strong>, driven by North Atlantic storms. Between April and October, Praia do Norte is a calm beach with safe swimming.<\/p><p><strong>Nazar\u00e9 S\u00edtio<\/strong> is the upper village on a promontory <strong>110 m above sea level<\/strong>. The <strong>Nazar\u00e9 Funicular<\/strong>, a 318 m inclined railway built in <strong>1889<\/strong>, connects the beach-level town to S\u00edtio in approximately 2 minutes. At the northern tip of S\u00edtio stands the <strong>Fort of S\u00e3o Miguel Arcanjo<\/strong>, built in <strong>1577<\/strong> to defend the coast against pirate raids. The fort now houses the lighthouse and provides the primary elevated viewpoint over Praia do Norte &#8211; the vantage point used by photographers at every major big-wave its complete medieval wall circuit. Not a restoration. Not a replica. The same 1,565 m of limestone fortification that King Dinis I gave to Queen Isabel of Aragon as a wedding gift in<strong> 1282<\/strong> &#8211; a tradition that made \u00d3bidos part of the Portuguese queens&#8217; dowry for the next five centuries. The town is known as<strong> Vila das Rainhas<\/strong> &#8211; the Village of the Queens.<\/p><p>The Moors built the original castle and enclosure walls in the 8th century. In <strong>1148<\/strong>, King Afonso Henriques captured \u00d3bidos during the same southward military campaign that took Lisbon. The perimeter wall stands \u00a0and is <strong>1\u20132 m wide<\/strong> at the top. The full circuit takes 30\u201345 minutes on foot. The castle at the north end has operated as a state heritage hotel (Pousada) since 1950.<\/p><p>In 2007, \u00d3bidos was voted one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal (village category). In <strong>2015<\/strong>, UNESCO designated \u00d3bidos a Creative City of Literature &#8211; one of eight such cities in Portugal.<\/p><p><strong>Ginja de \u00d3bidos:<\/strong> Cherry liqueur made from Morello cherries (*Prunus cerasus austera*) macerated in aguardente with cinnamon and cloves. The recipe traces to Cistercian monks of the region in the 17th century. In \u00d3bidos, it is served in an edible dark chocolate cup &#8211; a format introduced in <strong>1987<\/strong> by D\u00e1rio Pimp\u00e3o on Rua Direita.
