Town<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00d3bidos is the midpoint stop on this route &#8211; a fully intact medieval town where the entire <strong>1,565 m<\/strong> wall circuit is walkable in 30 minutes and the only money spent is on Ginja de \u00d3bidos cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup.<\/p>\n<p>The name derives from the Latin <strong>oppidum<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;fortified town.&#8221; The Moors built the first castle and enclosure walls in the 8th century. In <strong>1148<\/strong>, King Afonso Henriques captured \u00d3bidos during the same southward military campaign that took Lisbon from Moorish control. In <strong>1282<\/strong>, King Dinis I gave the town as a wedding gift to Queen Isabel of Aragon, beginning a tradition that made \u00d3bidos part of the Portuguese queens&#8217; dowry for five centuries. The town is still known as Vila das Rainhas &#8211; the Village of the Queens.<\/p>\n<p>The perimeter wall stretches <strong>1,565 m<\/strong> and stands <strong>13 m<\/strong> high. The full circuit is walkable in 30\u201345 minutes. Some outer sections have no handrail &#8211; standard shoes and care are sufficient. The castle at the north end has operated as a state heritage hotel (Pousada) since <strong>1950<\/strong>. In <strong>2007<\/strong>, \u00d3bidos was voted one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal in the village category. In <strong>2015<\/strong>, UNESCO designated the town a Creative City of Literature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ginja de \u00d3bidos:<\/strong> Cherry liqueur made from Morello cherries macerated in aguardente with cinnamon and cloves &#8211; a recipe traced to Cistercian monks of the region in the 17th century.
