data-end=\"269\">\u00d3bidos is the final stop and the one most travellers want to return to &#8211; a fully intact medieval walled town where the entire <strong data-start=\"126\" data-end=\"137\">1,565 m<\/strong> wall circuit is walkable in 30\u201345 minutes and the interior streets have remained architecturally consistent since the 18th century.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"271\" data-end=\"749\">The town was captured by King Afonso Henriques of Portugal in <strong data-start=\"333\" data-end=\"341\">1148<\/strong> during the same southward campaign that led to the conquest of Lisbon from Moorish control. The name derives from the Latin <em data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"475\">oppidum<\/em>, meaning \u201cfortified town.\u201d In <strong data-start=\"506\" data-end=\"514\">1282<\/strong>, King Dinis I gave \u00d3bidos as a wedding gift to Queen Isabel of Aragon, beginning a tradition that made the town part of the queens\u2019 dowry for nearly five centuries. \u00d3bidos remains known as <strong data-start=\"704\" data-end=\"724\">Vila das Rainhas<\/strong> (Village of the Queens).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"751\" data-end=\"1228\">The perimeter wall measures <strong data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"790\">1,565 m<\/strong> in length and reaches up to <strong data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"827\">13 m<\/strong> in height. The full circuit is walkable in approximately 30\u201345 minutes. The wall path is narrow (around 1\u20132 m wide) and lacks handrails in certain sections, requiring caution. The walk provides uninterrupted views over the whitewashed historic centre and the surrounding agricultural plains. The castle at the northern end of the walls has operated as a Pousada (state heritage hotel) since <strong data-start=\"1219\" data-end=\"1227\">1950<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1453\">In <strong data-start=\"1233\" data-end=\"1241\">2007<\/strong>, \u00d3bidos was selected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal in the village category. In <strong data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1339\">2015<\/strong>, UNESCO designated it a <strong data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1395\">Creative City of Literature<\/strong>, making it part of the global network of literary cities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1889\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1475\">Ginja de \u00d3bidos:<\/strong> The local cherry liqueur is made from Morello cherries (<em data-start=\"1532\" data-end=\"1556\">Prunus cerasus austera<\/em>) macerated in aguardente (grape spirit) with cinnamon and cloves, a tradition often attributed to Cistercian monastic practices in the 17th century. In \u00d3bidos specifically, it is served in an edible chocolate cup.
