The castle entrance is free.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/yellowcabtttours.pt\/almourol\/\">Almourol Castle<\/a> stands on a granite island in the Tagus River, <strong>34 km south of Tomar<\/strong>. It was built by Gualdim Pais in <strong>1171<\/strong> as part of the Templar defensive line along the Reconquista frontier. The castle is constructed in granite masonry, measures approximately <strong>310 m long by 75 m wide<\/strong>, and rises <strong>18 m<\/strong> above the waterway. Nine circular towers reinforce the perimeter walls. The keep is three storeys tall.<\/p><p>Almourol is a<strong> National Monument of Portugal<\/strong>. He led the Portuguese fleet that reached Brazil on <strong>22 April 1500<\/strong> &#8211; and most guides list his burial site as somewhere in Lisbon. It is in Santar\u00e9m, at the <strong>Igreja da Gra\u00e7a<\/strong>, in a city most visitors never visit.<\/p><p>Santar\u00e9m is 65 km northeast of Lisbon, positioned on a plateau above the Tagus River plain. The Romans established a settlement here as <strong>Scalabis<\/strong> in the 2nd century BC. Our first tour was 4 years ago so I think it says something that we came back for a second tour. Once again, we did a private tour and again, I think it was the best decision for us. We like having the little bit of wiggle room in terms of pace of sites and not having to wait on anyone else or have anyone else wait on us.\n\nWe had a wonderful day with Jorge!\nMy husband and his dad enjoyed all the extensive history information and chatting. The sites are beautiful and we had a delicious lunch and even got to pop in a couple of shops along the way around town. My FIL has bad knees and Jorge was sure to check in to make sure everyone was doing okay with the pace we were going at.
