The monastery is a <strong data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"346\">UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"349\" data-end=\"774\">The Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vit\u00f3ria was commissioned by <strong data-start=\"408\" data-end=\"423\">King Jo\u00e3o I<\/strong> following the <strong data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"481\">Battle of Aljubarrota on 14 August 1385<\/strong> &#8211; in which a Portuguese force of approximately 6,500 defeated a Castilian army of approximately 31,000. Construction began <strong data-start=\"605\" data-end=\"613\">1386<\/strong> and continued until <strong data-start=\"634\" data-end=\"642\">1517<\/strong> &#8211; <strong data-start=\"645\" data-end=\"658\">131 years<\/strong> across seven reigns, incorporating Portuguese Gothic (14th\u201315th century) and Manueline (early 16th century) styles.<\/p><p data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"992\"><strong data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"811\">Royal Cloister (Claustro Real):<\/strong> Ground level in Portuguese Gothic under Afonso Domingues; upper level added in Manueline style.
