    Places to Visit

Founded in the 11th century, the Order of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, commonly known as the Templars, played a key role in the crusades and battles of conquest of Portuguese territory.Having received from D. Afonso Henriques various fiefdoms and estates, he left us a vast and rich historical legacy, especially north of the Tagus River, where he developed a unique and effective fortified defense system.

It is in this region that we center our Historic Templar Route, visiting Tomar, Almourol and Santarém.

In this tour we will depart from Lisbon towards Tomar, where we will visit the Santa Maria dos Olivais Church.

Built in the 12th century, it served as the pantheon and the Grand Masters of the Order were buried here. It was later elevated to the Cathedral of the Order of Christ, with all the churches in the territories found in Africa, Asia and America under its purview.

Departing from the discovery of the historic city center, based on the plan of Infante D. Henrique in the 15th century, we highlight the Church of São João Baptista and Praça da República.

Here you will learn a little more about the life and history of this picturesque city.

We will go up to the Mata dos Sete Montes and reach the Templar Castle and Convent of Christ. This monumental ensemble, begun in 1160, spans the entire Templar presence in our country and was the central command point of the fortified defense system, made up of various castles and watchtowers.

From the 15th century, the Order of Christ reused and modernized the old Castle, creating one of the most intriguing and mysterious national monuments, the Convent of Christ, classified since 1983 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Leaving Tomar, we will cross some inner villages until we reach the Almourol Castle.

Around 1170, this castle was erected on a small island about 20 meters above water level, having a strategic importance in the so-called Tagus Defensive Line.

Heading south, enjoying the fields and the Ribatejo plain, we will reach Santarém.

This city has as one of its most emblematic monuments, the medieval fence of Portas do Sol and the Tower of Cabaças. From here we can appreciate the entire Ribatejo plain, the Tagus and understand the central strategic importance of this place.Filled with memories and good times, we will leave for Lisbon where we will drop off where they are installed.
