Carmo Convent has been standing open to the sky since 1 November 1755. The stone roof over its nave came down in the Great Lisbon Earthquake and was never rebuilt \u2014 not because nobody got around to it, but because the city decided, deliberately, to leave it that way. Walk into the ruins today and you are looking at a decision, not a ruin someone forgot to finish.<\/p>

Most visitors know Carmo Convent as “the roofless church” and stop there. That undersells it. The man who founded it in 1389 was Portugal’s most successful general, who later became a friar inside the same walls and was made a saint in 2009. The museum built into the ruins is the oldest archaeology museum in Portugal, older than most of the country’s national institutions. One of its side chapels holds the grave of Christopher Columbus’s wife. And the building next door was the last stand of a 48-year dictatorship, in an event most visitors have never connected to the ruins they’re standing in.<\/p>

This guide covers how the convent came to be built, why the earthquake left it the way it is, what’s actually inside the museum, the 1974 revolution that played out a few steps from the nave, and what you need to know before visiting.
