Within a year, none of it was legally allowed to exist.<\/p><p>Most visitors who walk through <a href=\"https:\/\/yellowcabtttours.pt\/blog\/alfama-lisbon\/\">Alfama<\/a> today are looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/yellowcabtttours.pt\/blog\/fado-guide\/\">fado houses<\/a> and river views. Few know that the street they are standing on, Rua da Judiaria, marks the site of one of the three judiarias that housed Lisbon&#8217;s Jewish community until the expulsion order of 1497 \u2014 and the only one whose name survived long enough to still appear on a modern street sign.<\/p><p>This guide covers what the Jewish quarter in Lisbon actually was before three separate districts were reduced to one legal status overnight, why the 1497 expulsion happened, what took place at S\u00e3o Domingos church in 1506, why the city&#8217;s one surviving synagogue is built behind a courtyard wall instead of facing the street, and what is still standing in Alfama today.
